If your VHS records are older than 10 yo, they are already starting to degrade.
Your memories are victims of heat, humidity, use and simply time because the tape is made of magnets. What you see 10 or 20 years later is not like what you saw when you just recorded it.

If you ask an expert they will tell you that the life of a VHS is 5-10 years. This is because it depends on many factors. The way you use and store your cassettes can lengthen or shorten their life:

1 MATERIAL DAMAGE

- How carefully you handle it.
- Never play the tape. Always take the cassette from the sides.
- Return the cassette before storing it.
- Avoid throwing or hitting them (the memories inside may get hurt too...).
- Keep them away from magnetic fields (even horns produced magnetic fields).
- Never leave them in the car or where they can be affected by the sun and changes in hot-cold temperatures.
- If you are going to use a cassette check that it is at room temperature, if not, leave it for a while so that it adapts to the temperature of the room.
- If your cassette has been stored for a long time, experts recommend advancing it and returning it occasionally.(Let's watch that scene again!. that one of you being a fucking asshole with your soulmates. haha funny)

2. STORAGE

- Store them in stable conditions, in a cool and dry place.
- Avoid hot, humid and dusty places.
- Keep them in their case or box.
- Arrange them vertically to distribute the force of gravity.

3. HOW OFTEN YOU SEE THEM (I MEAN, THE TAPES, OBVIOUSLY)

- If you haven't seen your video since you recorded it, it's 10-20 years that a section of the cassette has been stretching, probably causing that piece of tape to be more degraded.
- If you have been watching continuously, you will not find blurred or so degraded sections but it does affect the life time of your cassette. (PLEASE... DON'T... DON'T DO THAT...)
